Mid-winter blooming

A chessboard cast in ice,

frozen berries black against the perfect snow,

caught mid-winter blooming

by the frigid touch of Winter’s hands.

The hedge’s leaves, glossy green,

promise nature’s reawakening,

and reminds the slumbering world

that gentle Spring will come again soon.
