Worthless

Every step I take

Your shadow dogs my path,

Paws close to heels,

Your hot breath

On the back of my neck, with

Every forward movement

I can feel your claws reaching out

Towards me, poised to hook

Into flesh already mortified

From years of self-abnegation

And penance.

I’ve done my time

Under your wardenship,

Locked up in perpetual prison,

A no-place of your making

And parole for me, should be

Guilt free, yet, barely a day goes by

When something reminds me

Of my sentence,

And I’m there again,

Back behind bars.
