Change

They told me that ‘change was good’

that every time my life twists instead of turns,

I stand to learn something new, something profound

about myself, and yet, this immaterial wealth

cannot be counted – one to one hundred –

in golden coins, gems or real estate

its estate is instead, the space inside my head.

That impossible space

impossible to colonise or change

because it is already colonised with the thoughts

and experiences of my life so far,

so how much more, can one brain

map onto the planes and expanses

of the psyche?

I tell her, ‘change is good’, that change

will change her body, she will grow

and become the person that she intends to be

and when she does, I’m sure that she’ll change me.
