Japanese tea house by the lake

Tea house standing silent by the water’s edge

Red and black wooden walls

Offset by white sliding doors

Glass panels that reveal and conceal

The space within

The lake laps lugubriously

In soft waves at the base of the stilts

Up above, on the decking, people sit

And watch the insects bounce on the water

The boats paddle slowly

And

The wind chases the clouds across the summer sky.

This poem was inspired by the beautiful tea house that stands by the boating lake at Hever Castle, in Kent.
