Earth Mother

She walked like a goddess

Breasts and belly straining

At the thin cotton of her ochre dress

Hips swaying

Face set

A smile on her lips

She knew the power of her body

She felt the life growing

Within her

And, as the sun warms the Earth

She warms the baby growing, growing

In her womb

She walks like a goddess


She is






A piece based on observation – I saw a pregnant lady walking along in town, and despite the heat, she just looked so…well, brilliant! So healthy, and happy. I was inspired to write a happy poem for the joys that can be experienced in pregnancy.
